The Children’s Speech Development Research Project is directed by Glenda Mason, speech-language pathologist (SLP) and lecturer at the UBC School of Audiology and Speech Sciences.

Glenda Mason’s clinical experience in speech-language pathology has spanned many years, working with a variety of preschool and school-aged children with communication disorders, and their parents/caregivers, teachers and educational assistants. This time has included clinical education of SLP students. Her career highlights have been the shift to collaborative and client-centered approaches, and the strengthened focus on science-based (evidence-based) practice.

Dr. Mason has served on a number of committees of the SLP professional associations, including provincial and national conference committees. Similarly, as her own children grew up, she was involved in various community agencies.

Dr. Mason’s research focuses on school-aged children’s abilities to say complex, long words (multisyllabic words) accurately. She also studies how the accuracy level of saying complex words is related to reading and spelling. A part of her research was the development of a method for measuring the accuracy level of saying multisyllabic words. The method is being evaluated as a measurement tool for SLPs’ and researchers’ use. Computerized scoring and analysis methods, and their application to other languages are also being explored.

Dr. Mason’s course teaching includes topics in Developmental Communication Disorders. Some of her teaching goals are to expand case-based learning opportunities, and to support UBC’s initiatives to blend face-to-face and online instruction.
